Do you want to show post excerpts rather than full posts on the WordPress blog?
Some themes let you show post excerpts on the website by default. But many other themes are unable to limit your character length and you have to show entire contents in homepage, archives, and other parts of the website. I have seen lots of such themes at the beginning of my blogging career. I tried several templates in those days and post excerpt is one of the reasons why I changed from one theme to another.
You can opt for post excerpts through the default WordPress settings (Settings > Reading >For each article in a feed, show). If it is not working and still your website shows full posts in the feed, you have to edit the theme code.
Go to Appearance -> Editor -> Home.php or index.php of your theme.
Find the following line from the codes,
<?php the_content(); ?>
replace it with
<?php the_excerpt(); ?>
Save the changes.
Clear your caches and check your home page, it should display post excerpts rather than full posts now. If not, try to use the following tag in your single posts or pages at the point where you want the post’s content to stop displaying on the front page.
But the main drawback of this option is that you need to insert this tag in each and every post. You can avoid theme editing and install relevant plugins to quickly manage the part.
Show excerpts in WordPress homepage, archives and others (Plugin method)
Easy Custom Auto Excerpt is a simple plugin that lets you show excerpts in the home, archive, search, and custom pages. You can set a character length for excerpts in different parts of the site and customize the read more text, button, adjust image excerpt position and disable excerpt in specific post if needed.
Advanced Excerpt is another plugin in the category which is also easy to use and flexible. It will trim your excerpt to a given length using either character count or word count and completes the last word or sentence in an excerpt. The plugin supports excerpts on the homepage, archive, category, tag, search results, and RSS feed. It also allows you to add own text to replace read more link and disable excerpts by page types.
