How to Quickly Take a Screenshot on Mac- 6 Ways to Record Your Screen

Mac provides plenty of ways to take a screenshot on the computer. It doesn’t require any third party tools and the output will automatically be saved to your desktop.

Take a screenshot of the whole screen

  • Make sure that you are in the desired screen for which you want to take the screenshot.
  • Press Command+Shift+3.
  • The file will be saved on your desktop with the name starting with Screenshot and in .png format.

Take a screenshot of specified part of a screen

  • Press Command+Shift+4.
  • The cursor will change into a crosshair.
  • Click and drag it to the desired part of the screen to take the picture.
  • Release the mouse or trackpad when you have finished the selection.
  • Mac will automatically record the section on your desktop as a .png file.

Take a screenshot of a window

  • Press Command+Shift+4.
  • The pointer will change into a crosshair.
  • Press the spacebar. Now the cursor will change into a camera.
  • To go back to the previous mode, just hit the spacebar again.
  • Move camera over the window to select it. Now it will be in blue color.
  • Left click on the mouse or trackpad.
  • The screenshot appears on your desktop in the .png format.

Take a screenshot of a menu

  • Open the menu.
  • Press Command+Shift+4.
  • Now you will see the pointer in the form of a crosshair, like the previous steps.
  • Click and drag it to select the menu.
  • Release the mouse or trackpad when you have finished the selection.
  • The screenshot will appear on your desktop.

Take a screenshot using Grab utility tool

  • Open Grab from Applications > Utilities.
  • Click Capture from the menu bar to show sub-menus.

Selection: Record a selected portion of your screen

Window: Take a picture of a specific window

Screen: Record a screen

Timed screen: Record a screen with a countdown timer.

The output will not be automatically saved. Hence don’t forget to save your picture from File > Save in the menu bar.

Take a screenshot of the Touch bar

If your OS has a touch bar,

  • Press Command+Shift+6.
  • Find out the screenshot on your desktop.
